Neoprene, also known as chloroprene rubber, is a synthetic rubber produced primarily through α-polymerization of chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene) as the main raw material. It is widely used in weather-resistant products, adhesive shoe soles, coatings, and rocket fuels. Neoprene exhibits excellent physical and mechanical properties, oil resistance, heat resistance, flame resistance, sunlight resistance, ozone resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and resistance to various chemical agents. However, it has drawbacks in terms of poor cold resistance and storage stability. It has high tensile strength, elongation, and reversible crystallinity, as well as good adhesion. It is resistant to aging and heat, and shows exceptional resistance to oil and chemical corrosion. One disadvantage is its poor storage stability as it can undergo “self-sulfurization,” leading to increased Mooney viscosity and hardening of the raw rubber.
